Making Money From Home Advice - What a Minefield

There are a huge number of people who would like to make money from home. There is an even larger amount of people who are trying to sell get rich quick schemes to these people, where the only one who gets rich is the scheme provider.

After all, if a person has a system where he is making, quote “$100,000 a month” unquote, why would he bother trying to sell you a manual and a CD for $29.95? Unless, perish the thought, he is lying through his teeth, and is actually making his money selling you CDs and books which instruct you on how to sell more CDs and books, on how to get rich quick, to other unsuspecting clientele!

The scheme smells of pyramids…

But there are people working from home, so how does one find that method or opportunity to give up your horrible day job and start working for yourself?

Some rather wise advice that I gleaned from ploughing through discussion forums on the internet, is that people who are working from home consistently advise that you start small, and keep your day job until your home business starts to fly. Being highly qualified in failure myself, I’d say that’s good advice, more so if you have a family to support. If you are single and have no dependents, then by all means chuck up your day job and pour your energies into your new venture: but just do some serious market research first. Find out if the public really want your product.

For the family man or woman, it’s a bigger decision. Some of the advice and methodology I’ve picked up along the way is:

Ask yourself “What product/service would I myself be willing to pay money for, from a perfect stranger?” and then try selling or providing that.

Keep your product/service as cheap as possible. Don’t try and get rich overnight by overcharging.

Only spend online what you’ve made online. This is difficult to do when you’re just starting out, but at least keep your capital outlay to a minimum.

Don’t spend money you can’t afford to lose. Unless of course the customers are battering down your door to get your product!

Choose an ethical product/service to sell or promote. Don’t set yourself up as a child-slave agent, for example. Rather do something that really helps other people. Then your business will endure.

Do market research. Find what needs there are, where there are opportunities and niches that you can fill.

Do an honest self appraisal of yourself and your abilities. Take your appraisal to someone you trust and ask them if they think your appraisal of yourself is accurate. Then fit your home business plan to your strengths and abilities.

Be honest. Don’t try and crook anybody, or fool the customer. You will benefit from this later as word-of-mouth advertising gets around.

If you have a wife and kids, don’t let the business take all your time. Leave enough time to spend with your family. If your business succeeds but your family have left you, it won’t help you any.

Have confidence in your abilities.

If you fail, pick yourself up and try again. Like Winston Churchill said: “Never, ever, ever give up!!”

Of course, it takes guts to go into your own business, and we have to take risks. But we have to do our homework as well, and try and find out what we can do and what will work.

In my experience, it takes quite a bit of hard, slogging work to get going. But that makes it more worthwhile, and sweeter, when you do succeed, and the bucks start coming in.
